In general, I’m not feeling Power this season. Everyone is getting on my nerves. I don’t like this Jamie and Angie thing. Like, other than sex, which doesn’t even seem all that good anymore, what do they have? Their relationship has gone from living in a fantasy to real world problems, which is real life, but it’s just not fun anymore. They’re staying in Angie’s teeny apartment and living on top of each other, Angie can’t cook, demands of work put the relationship on the back burner, and they’re constantly annoyed with each other. Oh, and they’re both lying by omission to each other all the time. The one thing Angie has going for her is that she believes in Jamie and his attempt to live by the law, which Tasha couldn’t fathom. I wonder how many times James has thought about the 80/20 rule. Tasha wasn’t perfect, but she had a lot that Angie lacks. Maybe Jamie should have tried harder to get Tasha on board with his living clean vision.
I also never liked Holly, and there’s a lot of her this season. She’s also more annoying than ever before, badgering Tommy to kill Ghost, his best friend from at least junior high school. There’s a lot of Tommy too, who I like, but prefer in smaller doses. I also don’t like Tasha having Lala involved in some nefarious ish that Tasha hasn’t told her about. I get the logic that it’s best that Lala has plausible deniability if something goes awry with the business. But, it’s still grimy.
What I do like? I actually love Annika Noni Rose and I enjoy watching her take on an unexpected role and kill it, but without knowing her end game or motivation, I don’t get her either… yet. The scenes with her and Fiddy seem like a whole separate show. I also never liked Fiddy on the show.
That said, I am in love with the Executive Producer Courtney Kemp Agboh, so I trust all these loose threads will come together in an explosive, unexpected way at some point, but as for right now? I’m watching it for the same reason I kept watching Scandal when it got uninteresting: I’m invested in characters that I once loved, so now I want to see what happens to them. And I want to see how Holly or Angie suffer. Because you know it’s coming.
Anyway, let’s dive in to last night’s episode.
Tarik took Angie’s gun to school, got caught and now he has to go to therapy. Tasha has rightfully banned the kids from Angie’s house, and James is frustrated but can’t put up a decent argument. Angie feels awful about it all.
Tommy’s humping Holly from the back and this is the most detached sex ever. Neither of them seem into it, just going through the motions. Is it weird that I’m tired of watching all of the characters have sex?
I’m not surprised Tommy didn’t shower after sex, I am surprised he didn’t have more ass. Wasn’t a bad ass. Just thought there would be more. Anyway, post-sex, Holly is back to beating the same old drum, trying to convince Tommy to kill Ghost by outsourcing it to the Jamaicans. We do discover why Holly has been so gung ho about killing Ghost: she’s pregnant and has to protect her family from Lobos.
Down South, Jukebox is planning her next crime with her crew. They’re robbing a jewelry store. Fiddy wants in, but Jukebox isn’t sure he can handle a gun, given his injuries. She tells him he probably can’t jerk off yet. Jukebox’s GF decides to put this to the test and seduces Fiddy making him beat his meat in front of her while Jukebox smokes out in her bedroom. Apparently, he’s able. We also get a glimpse of Fiddy’s peen, which I was surprisingly unimpressed by, but not surprised by. Fiddy’s been a public menace for the better part of a decade. We all thought he was compensating for something. Now we know what.
In the real world, Fiddy popped off on the show’s EP about his peen being shown. I’m still on the fence about whether that was for publicity or if he’s genuinely upset.
At work, Ghost is getting a rundown from his security company. Apparently, everything’s fine so far, but Ghsot wants to keep his personal detail “just to be safe”, especially since Lobos is still alive.
Over at Jamie’s former home, Angie is waiting for Tasha in the building’s lobby. Tasha’s spooked when she sees her. “Is he in jail?” she asks. “Is he dead?” Neither. Angie is there to apologize about Tarik and the gun and she wants Tasha to know that she got Tarik’s record expunged. Tasha isn’t thankful. Angie didn’t do it for her, or for Tarik, but for Ghost. “As long as you stay in this thing for him, you’re going to be doing for Ghost the rest of your life,” Tasha warns. Bloop!
Tommy meets with the Koreans, who he’s promised extra drugs too. The boss’s son, one finger short, doesn’t eff with Tommy. Everything about his face says he’s plotting revenge.
Greg has discovered that Ruiz in in San Diego and he’s flying out to see him to get him to testify against Lobos or Tommy or James. “[Ruiz] can end the whole network.” Greg assesses.
Angie gets home late to find Jamie drinking wine and cooking. He’s pissed that she went to see Tasha. Angie says she went with good intentions. Jamie says she should have asked. Angie says she doesn’t need permission. Jamie says she does, “especially when it comes to my wife.”. Angie takes it as the slap in the face it was intended to be. They would discuss further, but her sister is at the door. It’s time for a family dinner!
Poz ain’t been in the apartment but literally minute before she starts up some ish. She sees Jamie paid the rent and points out that Angie has always paid her own way and never depended on a man before. Bih! If you don’t get out this couple’s business. Angie seems mad that Jamie paid the rent. Um, ma’am? You got a rich providing man living in your house, and you’ve been vocal about being stretched thin with your money because you take care of your family. How mad your man paid the rent?
Across town at the St. Patricks, Tasha is giving Tarik a pep talk on what he should say to the therapist. The St. Patricks aren’t like other families, indeed, but what do Tarik and Reina actually know about the family business?
At Angie’s, Poz is being big sister messy, reminiscing about how much her dad hatedJamie, how Tommy wasn’t sh—and oh, yeah, Jamie, “how did your kids take the news about the divorce?” Go fish! Jamie isn’t divorced. “He’s working on it”, Angie says. Jamie tries to make a peace offering, offering Poz’s son a job at the club. She declines, “just in case things don’t work out between you and Angela.”
Fiddy and friends are on their way to rob a jewelry store. It goes according to plan, except Fiddy kills the guy who woks there., which was actually part of the plan. The other guys just didn’t know
Angie pops in to see Mike. She found the widow of a former informant who is living high. She wants to track her down. Mike tells her to research it, then hits up someone, probably someone on Lobos’ team to say they may have a problem. You think?
Jamie and Dre are meeting with Karen, the business blond he wants to work with. He’s trying to teach Dre the ropes, but Dre is a hood dude an ain’t adjusting well. He’s inappropriate with Blondie, telling her “you look banging in that dress”. Dre is supposed to be listening, but he does a lot of talking. Karen likes Jamie, but she’s alarmed that he isn’t on social media. Jamie says his brand is mystery. Karen says that ain’t gonna fly. “Your brand needs a face,” she says. “I can’t sell a ghost.”
Across the country in San Diego, Ruiz is mopping floors in a kitchen when Greg pops up. Ruizpretends he doesn’t know English and that he isn’t Ruiz He keeps up the ruse until Greg says that Lobos is after him to kill Ruiz and his family. The feds will protect him if he testifies, anddddd he can take his business back and run it “with the FBI’s blessing”. Oh, and he tells Ruiz his father is sick. Greg is full of sh--. But Ruiz bites.
Tommy and Holly swing by Tasha’s. There’s wine and Tasha catches Holly pouring her out. Ruh-oh! She grabs Holly for a girls’ chat in the bedroom while Tommy talks to Tarik about the importance of family. I love how Tommy loves this kid. I mean, Tommy’s nuts, but he might be a halfway decent dad. Ok. Maybe not. I can’t see Tommy looking after a baby.
Tasha ain’t holding no cut cards with Holly. “Fuck you gonna do with a baby?” she asks. “You ain’t been in the game but a minute. You gonna be a dealer’s baby mama?” Blessed are those that ask the questions, Sister. Holly ain’t got no answers. She also hasn’t told Tommy. She hasn’t decided if she’s keeping the kid yet. Tasha says Holly has to tell him she’s pregnant.
At Truth, James is on the mic identifying himself as the owner and offering everyone an open bar. I don’t know how this ends, but it doesn’t end well.
Back at the house, Holly’s hounding Tommy about killing Ghost again. She wants him to go the Jamaicans and have them do it. It starts an argument and it seems like Holly’s about to confess she’s pregnant, but Tommy’s mad and rolls out.
Jukebox’s girl, Candy, is cooking when Fiddy walks in. He has a gift for her, a diamond tennis bracelet he stole from the jewelry store but kept for himself. They have sex on the counter. Fiddy’s ass looks dull. I expected more ass from him too.
At the office, Knox is back on the job. He updates the team that he’s found Ruiz in San Diego, and better, Ruiz has agreed to testify Angie looks shook, which doesn’t go unnoticed.
At the St Patricks, Tasha and Bestie are talking shop about the beauty shop, the about the house. She’s redecorating, but doesn’t know what she likes. Ghost made all the decisions for them. She says she doesn’t remember who she was before him. Bestie is an awesome bestie. She tells Tasha she’ll be fine and when she’s ready she’ll find a man who will give her what “you like”. It makes me all the more upset about how dirty Tasha is doing Lala getting her good business involved in money laundering for Tommy’s drug business. Bestie also spots a gun in Tasha’s purse. Tasha says, “the shop ain’t exactly on the upper East Side”. Bestie ain’t no dummy. She asks Tasha if something more is going on. Tasha says no. “You’re my girl. If something else was going on I would tell you.” Lies. All lies.
Dre ain’t feeling the bougie life, and heads back to the block to catch up. He’s talking to a friend, who tells him that Koreans are doing hit on Tommy at a church.
Across town, Ghost is posing for pics at Truth. His security pulls him aside and says he needs to talk about Karen. Ghost brushes him off saying he needs to take a call. It’s Dre calling to tell him about Tommy. Andre asks Ghost if he wants him to handle it. Ghost says “nah” and tells Andre to report to Truth. Ghost calls Tommy, who doesn’t pick up.
Tommy reports to the church to pick up his money from the crooked priest, who it seems is selling drugs to get money for a new roof for the church. Tommy kinda confesses to the priest that he’s got to break a commandment. The priest tells Tommy that God only really cares about one Commandment: murder. The priest asks Tommy if he prayed about it. Tommy says nah. “You got to ask yourself if it’s the right thing to do and who gets hurt if you don’t,” the preist says.
Tommy exits the church and is greeted with a hail of bullets. Dre’s connect was correct. Tommy gets grazed in the arm and ducks behind a car. The Koreans light up the car like Sonny Corleone is in it. Suddenly, Ghost appears and shoots two of the shooters, then runs off. Ghost doesn’t know that his security detail was there to see the whole thing. Well. Jamie did hire the best. Can’t be mad at folks for being on their job.
Fiddy and Jukebox are out the strip club getting lap dances. Jukebox says he’s paying all night to make up for humping her girlfriend. Yeah. Candy told her. And furthermore, why is he giving away jewelry that can be traced back to the job? Fiddy says he needed to give Candy some incentive to have sex with him. Jukebox says all he had to do was ask. She would have said yes. Um. I have close cousins. More like sisters than cousins, really. This is not our relationship. Jukebox says it’s time for Fiddy to bounce. He has money now. Fiddy says he’s going to kill Ghost and take his business back. She says maybe Ghost is more useful alive than dead. He should keep him around until he’s not useful anymore. “Before you make a move, you got to ask yourself, what did Ghost really take away from you? Maye you need to change your plan,” she suggests. Something tells me than Kanan is going to go take Ghost’s family. Tasha should be getting a call/text/visit any second now.
Sidenote: I hope this isn't the end of Annika Noni Rose's role. I love her!
Holly’s at home checking her VM for her confirmation about the clinic when Tommy walks in with a gunshot wound. He doesn’t know who hit him, but he suspects it was Lobos. Holly says not to worry, everything is going to be all right. She says she’s leaving to get bandages and peroxide to keep the wound from getting infected. But really, she’s headed to Queens, to the Jamaicans. Enough is enough. She wants to put out a hit on James St. Patrick.
Jamie is back at Truth like nothing happened. Karen’s there and she’s excited that his face is all over social media. “Now everyone will know James St. Patrick” she says. “they’ll all know who you are.” Jamie. Nih. What are you doing?
Angie’s at work when Sax pops by. She ain’t all that pleased that Greg had a break in the case. Sax notes that Tommy and Ghost are going to jail. Someone gave Angie a cape because now she’s super shook.
Later, Angie’s at home on the couch downing red wine like Olivia Pope when Ghost gets home from the club. She’s saucy. He’s so chill, like he didn’t leave work, go kill some people and then go back. Neither of them wants to talk about their day. Lord. Why are these people together? Angie’s having the same thoughts. She tells Jamie, “I don’t think we’re gonna make it.” Angie says they’re always working, he’s not divorced, etc. “Did you ever wonder if everyone else was right and we’re wrong?” Jamie says he hasn’t and he’s not letting Angie go.
And scene.
